Biomedical Equipment Repair Training Program
The Biomedical Equipment Repair Program is dedicated to providing students with the best foundation of knowledge and experience to become biomedical technicians in developing countries. The program is based on practical outcomes and a process of continuous improvement of student skills and capabilities.
Overview
Biomedical technicians are those responsible for taking care of equipment and instruments used in healthcare practices. They inspect and install equipment used by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers for researching, monitoring, diagnosing, and treating illnesses or disorders. They also repair, calibrate, and safety test equipment in order to ensure proper function and safety for both the operator and the patient. They consult with staff to make sure that all equipment is functioning properly, and may demonstrate the proper use of equipment to the staff upon installation. They may also modify or develop devices used in healthcare. Biomedical technicians may work at hospitals, equipment manufacturers or repair services.
Description
Established in 2006 at MediSend International, the Biomedical Equipment Repair Program provides students from developing countries with the education, training and necessary skills to improve community healthcare conditions. In addition to a well-rounded biomedical technician education core, the curriculum includes such courses as physics, electronics, and anatomy and physiology. Students learn operational and inspection procedures, preventive maintenance tasks, and troubleshooting methods for most standard types of medical instrumentation. Throughout the courses, students gain real-time experience working with ultrasound systems, defibrillators, bedside monitors, infusion devices and anesthesia machines, to name a few. The curriculum culminates in over 550 hours of hands-on experience in repairing and using a broad range of biomedical equipment at MediSend's Biomedical Repair Laboratory.
The Biomedical Equipment Repair Program is unique in its method of delivering education to the students. In addition to staff led courses, guest lecturers from universities, equipment manufacturers and healthcare organizations provide various points of view on biomedical equipment, and topics on the forefront of biomedical technology. Additionally, companies such as the American Red Cross, American Heart and Fluke Biomedical provide on-site workshops.
Students have access to a number of study and training environments: lecture / classroom, research library and study, and two training laboratories.
One laboratory is equipped with electrical/mechanical tool kits and electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies and digital multimeters, and will be used to conduct basic troubleshooting.
A second laboratory is equipped with a full hospital setting of biomedical equipment. In addition, Fluke test, repair, simulation and calibration equipment such as patient simulators, electrical safety analyzers, ESU analyzers, defibrillator analyzers and IV pump analyzers are also available. MediSend's Biomedical Repair Laboratory is considered one of the best equipped educational and repair laboratories in the region.
