MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program

The MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™  is an exclusive, performance-based curriculum of theory and practical training with state-of-the-art equipment in a professional learning environment. The MediSend BMET program is the first such program to train and equip biomedical equipment repair technicians for developing country hospitals. At MediSend's headquarters in the Elisabeth Dahan Humanitarian Center in Dallas, TX, biomedical equipment repair trainees acquire the skills to install, repair, maintain, calibrate and properly operate life-saving biomedical equipment.

Certification

The MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™ has been evaluated by the United States Certification Commission (USCC) and the US BMET Board of Examiners, and it has been determined that the successful completion of the MediSend BMET program and two years full-time BMET work experience meet the current Option 2 eligibility requirements to sit for the U.S. based exam for full certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), under the International Certification Commission (ICC). Therefore, a student that successfully completes the MediSend BMET program is eligible to apply and sit for the CBET exam during the next available exam cycle under current full certification Option 2. The Current Option 2 is as follows: “Completion of a U.S. Military biomedical equipment technology program and two years full-time BMET work experience”.

Overview

Through the intensive training program, MediSend prepares technician trainees from developing country hospitals to return as professional biomedical technicians (BMETs). With a curriculum of over 900 hours of hands-on, practical experience installing, utilizing and repairing a broad range of biomedical equipment, trainees learn operational and inspection procedures, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting methods. The MediSend BMET program is based on practical outcomes and a process of continuous improvement of skills and capabilities.

Description

Established in 2006 at MediSend International, the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™ provides trainees from developing countries with the education and necessary skills to improve community healthcare conditions. In addition to a well-rounded biomedical repair education core, the curriculum includes such courses as physics, electronics, and anatomy and physiology. Trainees learn operational and inspection procedures, preventive maintenance tasks, and troubleshooting methods for most standard types of medical instrumentation. Throughout the courses, trainees gain real-time experience working with equipment such as ultrasound systems, defibrillators, bedside monitors, infusion devices and anesthesia machines. The curriculum culminates in over 900 hours of hands-on experience in repairing and using a broad range of biomedical equipment in MediSend's Biomedical Repair Laboratory.

The MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program is unique in its method of delivering education to the trainees. In addition to staff led courses, guest lecturers from universities, equipment manufacturers and healthcare organizations provide various points of view on biomedical equipment, and topics on the forefront of biomedical technology. Additionally, companies such as Philips provide on-site certified workshops. 

Trainees have access to a number of study and training environments: lecture / classroom, research library and study, and two training laboratories. One laboratory is equipped with electrical/mechanical tool kits and electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies and digital multimeters used to conduct basic troubleshooting.

A second laboratory is equipped with a full hospital setting of state-of-the-art biomedical equipment. In addition, repair, simulation and calibration equipment such as Laerdal Patient Simulators, electrical safety analyzers, ESU analyzers, defibrillator analyzers and IV pump analyzers are also available. MediSend's Biomedical Repair Laboratory is considered one of the best equipped educational and repair laboratories in the country.

MediSend Mobile Biomedical Equipment Test and Repair Kit™

As part of the Program, MediSend returns each graduate technician to his or her hospital with a MediSend Mobile Biomedical Equipment Test and Repair Kit™. The Kit contains over 4000 laboratory supply items, including essential repair tools and state-of-the-art test and calibration equipment typically unavailable in developing-country hospitals, enabling the technicians to begin accomplishing critical tasks immediately.
